SIFE Malaya

Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) is a global, non-profit organization that is literally changing the world through highly dedicated student teams on more than 1600 university campuses in 40 countries. SIFE offers these students the opportunity to develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills through learning, practicing and teaching the principles of free enterprise, thereby improving the standard of living for millions in the process. Guided by distinguished faculty advisors and supported by businesses around the globe, SIFE Teams teach important concepts through educational outreach projects, including market economics, entrepreneurship, personal and financial success, and business ethics to better themselves, their communities and their countries.

Each year, SIFE competitions are held worldwide, drawing together thousands of students and business leaders to pay tribute to these extraordinary educational outreach projects. SIFE Teams are judged on how innovative, creative, and effective they were in teaching these concepts:

1) People

2) Planet

3) Profit

Why Leech?

The Leech industry is not new in our history. The Western countries have advanced so much so that the annual transaction of live leech reaches 2 billion leeches. This figure alone shows the prospect of this industry and the promise it provides to our local entrepreneurs here in Malaysia to participate in this business.

However, our local scene isn't that bright as the leech industry here in Malaysia is currently facing problems in both supply and demand. The leech breeders find it hard to market their leeches,as the demand becoming less and less due to the lack of awareness among our people of its benefits and importance as alternative to modern medical treatments. Few years back, the leech industry in our country was great, sales were good but from time to time,it starts to deteriorate.

What is SIFE's role here? How are we helping out?

SIFE Malaya has decided to enter the Leech industry, apart from our existing aquaculture project (MOSHER). In this project, we have a few objectives we wish to achieve:

1. Help the government to sort out the leech industry so we can be on the same height with the other countries in this industry.

2. To create economic opportunities for the fresh graduates to be the leech therapists, leech breeders, products (cosmetics etc) which generally cover the upstream, midstream and downstream.

3. To raise awareness among the people the benefits of leech as an alternative to modern medical treatments, hence using less of chemical intakes.

4. To train our own SIFE members to be the leech entrepreneurs upon graduation, starting from their involvement in the project.

This project is currently in the leech therapists phase, therefore we are conducting training of trainers for the therapists, holding out seminars, joining expos, opening up new therapist center outlets in UM,pantai dalam and a few other universities in the near future.

Soon we are looking into breeding the leeches, therefore it gives the opportunity for the fresh graduates that we have identified to be the industry player in that field.Apart from that, we are looking into any interested parties (Media) to be our partner into helping our effort to raise the awareness among the people even better.

Standing firm side by side with our mission statement, creating a better world through symbiotic entrepreneurship,we are determined to help our government to reduce the rate of unemployment, create economic opportunities for others and one step forward towards realizing Vision 2020.

SIFE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES (SSR)

Head for business.Heart for the world.
For a while,I've been wondering what it really means. Is it simply creating business opportunities for the people and through that way, you've helped your community?

Then,I thought about it,much deeper.I was having a chat with my friend, hanging out at a cafe' when he suddenly brought up the topic about his friend, having cancer and at stage 4 already. To put it simply, the patient is giving up all hopes.

But that made me to think. What can SIFE do here? That's why, this week I came up with the SIFE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES (SSR), a programme where the SIFE students would identify the needy, less fortunate people who are suffering and on the verge of giving up all hopes.

One of our efforts so far is to collaborate with a leech therapy company (Hirudinaria Therapy) that uses bacteria-free leeches in their therapies. The company is a local company and is only a few months old. Therefore,in our bid to help local entrepreneurs and expand their influence in the leech industry,SIFE UM have decided to step in and help them. But besides that as well, we have also managed to strike a deal with them to supply free leeches for our SSR programmes where we apply free treatments for our "clients", for example the one that is having the cancer just now. We're not promising anything that will definitely cure him,but we will give our best to help him.

We are committed to reach out and help those who need help.
If you have any suggestions to whoever require help and ones that you think we,SIFE students might be able to help, email us at sifemalayauniversity@yahoo.com

Thank you for your time.

Creating a better world through entrepreneurship

I have always misunderstood mission statement before. This is because, before now I thought all the words that form the statement are just, well, words. However, this is something that should not be taken lightly anymore,by anyone who wants to lead an organization to achieve its goals and objectives, whatever they may be.

I was up late in the office one night, busy finishing up the SIFE Annual Reports to be submitted for Auditing when I thought of a simple yet meaningful line,at least for my team members and I and that line is:

"Creating a better world through entrepreneurship"

Well, the thing is,it's just plain obvious.Throughout 2009,our team SIFE MU,have been trying to work out something for the community to be part of;and that is business. We believe that entrepreneurship is the ideal answer to the recent economic crisis, which to date,is one of the worst so far in our history since the Great Depression in 1929.

Through SIFE and its vast network,we are in the right position to help out those who have great interest in entrepreneurship but are just too scared to try them out. Therefore,we believe,it is the job,not only for us from SIFE Malaya University's role to make them realize there is hope out there but also all the other SIFE teams around the world.

May our existence bring them light in their dark rooms.
